Week 7: 1st hull on the trailer, 2nd hull started

(Updated 7/2/2019)

--Building Minimus II

This past week we got various deck pieces glued on and painted the 1st hull.  Since Pearl wasn't as impressed as I was with the latex paint we used on the first Minimus, this time we went with oil-base Top Coat marine paint by Rustoleum.  We'll see how it stands up.  We wanted a slightly gray tone, which wasn't available, so we bought 4 quarts of white and then mixed in 12cc of black Rustoleum enamel per quart, which turned out just the hue we were after.  Top Coat was easy to work with.

A couple days later and with help from friends, we carried the 1st hull out of the shop and onto the trailer.  We couldn't resist seeing how high she would float, so trailered to the nearest water, which is the Willamette River.  Her design draft, fully loaded is about 13", so being empty she floated quite a bit higher than than.  With cross beams, bridge deck, rig, etc. added, she'll settle down quite a bit.

Yesterday we started hull #2.  Since both hulls are the same, we probably won't be posting much until hull # 2 is finished.  Hopefully that will be around the end of this month.  Meanwhile I'll be recording how many hours the second hull takes to build.

Cross beam supports and hatch coamings glued in place, followed by
fairing and sanding.  1st hull is now ready for paint.
