Week 6: 1st hull--decks and cabin tops glued on, beam cleats cut and glued

(Updated 6-24-2019)

--Building Minimus II

We put two coats of epoxy on the inside of the forward and aft compartments, then glued the deck and cabin tops on and coated them with two coats of epoxy.  After that set up, we took a couple tips from Russell Brown's excellent "Epoxy Basics".  Putting an epoxy/microballon putty mix into a small plastic bag, we cut the corner of the bag off and squeeze the bag like a caulking gun to make fillets where the cabin tops met the deck.  Fast and clean.  Also filled a syringe with similar putty to fill all the screw holes.  Again, fast and clean.  The little bit of excess putty protruding from the filled holes comes off quick and neat with a sharp chisel after the putty is mostly hardened.  It eliminates a lot of sanding.

We also cut, routed, assembled and glued on the cross beam cleats.

The plan for this week is to wrap up the finish work and paint the first hull. Then we'll move it out of the shop and onto the trailer so the second hull can be started.  Hull #2 should go together much quicker since the innumerable little judgment calls have already been made on the first hull.

Deck and cabin tops on, plus two coats of epoxy.  Ready for
fairing putty.

Cross beam cleats glued in place.  In addition to gluing, these will also be through-bolted
with two 5/16" stainless bolts per cleat.  The smaller intermediate cleats are for
deck supports.

Cross beam cleats under construction.

Mizzen mast collar, made of 3 layers of 1/2" MDO.

by a neighbor and has been hanging out in the shop the past week.
